The Super Mario Bros. Movie, 2023 - ★★★½
I had fun with this. Pratt was not the worst voice, it was Seth Rogen. Illumination knows how to make a gorgeous movie.
Bloodsport, 1988 - ★★★
"It's time to protect your nuts, guys."
This is the intro to the Kumite and I loved it. 90 minutes of cheese and cheesy action. What more can you ask for?
The Worst Person in the World, 2021 - ★★★★★
This would have been my top movie of 2021.
Julie and Aksel's relationship has Before Sunset vibes, but with the added depth of Julie's narcissism. This movie is a difficult yet somehow hopeful watch about aging and finding your purpose. I loved every minute of it.
Oppenheimer, 2023 - ★★★★
I liked it a lot. Just enough Nolan grandeur and an incredible cast to round out the most depressing blockbuster of the year. Murphy deserves all the praise for his performance. RDJ sneaky good too.
Ip Man 3, 2015 - ★★★★
Don't you dare try and punch my wife in an elevator! Seriously the stair/elevator fight was incredible to watch.
"The world isn't fair, but moral standards apply to us all."
Why does Netflix default to playing foreign language films dubbed in English? So frustrating.
Ip Man, 2008 - ★★★★
I too want to fight 10 people and kick their ass, but I do not possess any of the skills to do so.
The Terminator, 1984 - ★★★★
1. Arnold is the man.
2. There's still 6 years for the future James Cameron depicts to become reality.
3. Having a pet iguana in the 80s seems so rad.
Under the Skin, 2013 - ★★★★
This film bothered me the whole time I watched it. I couldn't tell if I actually even liked it. But I couldn't look away. It is mesmerizing, haunting, and the cinematography is top notch. What Jonathan Glazer does here is deserving of all the praise reaped on it in 2013. Yet, this is definitely not for everyone - I'm still struggling to figure out if I enjoyed it. But it really makes you think and unnerves you.
Aaron's Top 10 Pixar Films
My ranking of the top 10 Pixar films as of the release of Elemental (2023). Will continuously update this as new films come out and I see them.
And yes, I just don't like the Cars movies 😂
Elemental, 2023 - ★★★★
The best looking Pixar film. I quite enjoyed this despite it not being critically received well. The love story worked for me, they nailed immigrant story. Give it a chance for yourself. Looks great on the big screen.
Finally got a chance to watch the Dune Part 2 trailer. I cannot wait for this film.
Asteroid City, 2023 - ★★★★½
Another dazzling display of Wes Anderson’s signature style. This movie is beautiful; he uses dioramas and models in tasteful ways, and continues the vibrant palette that he made famous.
Asteroid City captivated me with its themes of loneliness and wonder. In the end though, I can’t help but think this is a middle finger to all the Wes Anderson haters for the mixed reactions to The French Dispatch.
My Neighbor Totoro, 1988 - ★★★½
Didn't like this as much as I expected to. The cat bus is absolutely terrifying.
Groundhog Day, 1993 - ★★★★
"I'm happy now, because I love you."
The things we do for love. Including but not limited to reliving the same day over and over again.
Extraction 2, 2023 - ★★★
I think I like the first one better. This is more of the same as Extraction 1, but still I enjoyed the action. The prison break scene is awesome.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, 2023 - ★★★★★
This movie is incredible. It is utterly beautiful in its animation, changing styles at will, somehow seamlessly.
And at the same time it’s moving and inspiring in its plot. Go see this movie and see it on the big screen. You won’t be disappointed.
